Twentynine Palms, 2010 - June 24

So far, today’s been even quieter than all the other days.

Took a few pictures.

Helped Newt with his web page just a trifle.

Not much else.

Very nice.

Cathy got back from teaching, and as the sun closed with the horizon, the five of us, Cathy, Newt, Me, Stella, & Bonzo, all took a nice walk off to the east, to shoot a few pictures of some homesteader shacks over that way, a mile or so out into the open creosote, that Cathy knew about. Newt got her a nice D40 last year, so the two of us both had the same camera, and it was fun hiking, looking around, and shooting a few pictures. A fat gibbous moon hung over the mountains to the southeast, just as an added touch, to improve an already matchless Western Sky.

Had a blast with it.

And then in far less time than we would have liked, the sun dipped below the horizon and the good light disappeared in the twinkling of an eye, and that was that. Whatever you've got is all you're going to get.

So we departed.

But as we worked our way upslope back to the house, the sky itself decided to take center stage, and I'm fool enough to think I can actually get a useful picture of something as deceptively simple as the gathering shades of night.

Well you can't blame a guy for trying, right?

And the dark kept on gathering, and I kept on playing around with the exposure settings, and kept on shooting.

At the very end, the moon decided to steal the show, and I still kept on going till I found myself shooting hand-held at one sixth of a second (maybe try that for yourself some day with a non-VR lens and see how it works for you), at which point I figured I'd gotten everything I was going to be able to get, put the lens cap back on the camera, and called it a day (and night).
